NIGEL MOONEY’S HIP OPERATION

This is the most popular “wedding” or dinner-dance band and is primarily a jazz quintet consisting of myself on vocals and guitar; saxophone (usually tenor), piano, double bass and drums. The music we play for dancing is a lively mix of swinging jazz standards (Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett etc), rhythm ‘n’ blues (Ray Charles, B.B. King etc), sixties, fifties, Irish waltz, pepper and salts, novelty, popular, gobbledygook. There is a sample set-list somewhere on the page.

NIGEL MOONEY QUARTET

My regular touring quartet, that is- me with piano, bass and drums, -essentially the Hip Operation minus the saxophonist. This slightly smaller group performs the same dance set as the Hip Operation but without the saxophone solos and therefore you’ll get more tunes while saving a bit on the costs.

NIGEL MOONEY GETS THE HORNS

This is the septet, consisting of the regular quartet (as above) with added horns section consisting of trumpet and two tenor saxophones and a full set of seven-part arrangements. I have a wonderful book of charts written by Irish and international musicians featuring arrangements of standards and blues, Basie and bebop and it’s an exciting (if rare) event when I gets the horns.

NIGEL MOONEY’S B.L.T.

The Brook Lodge Trio can be seen every Friday night in The Brook Lodge Hotel in Macreddin, Co. Wicklow, where we have been entertaining the after-dinner guests since the 20th century with a sophisticated blend of jazz standards and bossa novas. Piano and double-bass accompany guitar melodies (and occasional vocals); the B.L.T. is ideal for an afternoon reception or corporate situation where background music is required.

So you’re thinking of hiring some music for your event? Well, I should be able to put something together that would suit you, whether it’s for a wedding, dinner- dance or party, or perhaps a corporate event or reception where something more sophisticated in the background is required.

I’ve been playing jazz and the blues throughout Ireland and beyond for almost thirty years now, and in that time I’ve performed at hundreds of weddings and corporate events without marketing my act as a “wedding” band or attempting to target the corporate sector- God forbid. However, since the release of my first album in 2005 and the setting up of this website, I regularly receive email enquiries as to the availability of my band and the nature of the music that could be played at a given event.

I find the constant emailing back and forth a little wearing and, for me, it’s not the easiest medium in which to discuss such complexities as band numbers, musical styles and any amount of other details, so I have drawn up a list of the bands I have available for hire and a description of each for your perusal.

Each act has something different to offer and is made up of Ireland’s finest musicians- we don’t use backing tracks or recordings. While jazz is one element of what we play, the sets performed at your event would be drawn from a wide range of musical styles and will be entirely appropriate to the occasion. I have recently produced a demo-C.D. specifically related to this web-page; a sort of “E.P. Mooney” or “wedding album” containing a selection of recordings of various different acts similar to those listed below; if you haven’t already got it I can put it in the post to you.
